How to Choose Japanese Koi for Your Pond

Start with the individual koi and the pond it will join. A good purchase combines a fish you enjoy with clear information, suitable husbandry and a practical arrival plan.

Set your shortlist before your budget stretches

Choose the varieties and appearance you like, decide your total budget including delivery and consider the capacity of your existing pond. Current size and price are easier to compare than promises about future growth. A young fish can change as it develops; no dealer can guarantee its eventual pattern or show result.

Read the listing as a specification

  • Reference: use the individual fish reference in enquiries.
  • Variety: check what is actually listed, including Ginrin or Doitsu where relevant.
  • Breeder: distinguish recorded breeder information from a general claim of Japanese origin.
  • Age and size: compare like with like and ask when a measurement was taken.
  • Sex and documentation: ask if these matter; do not assume a sex or a breeder certificate when it is not stated.
  • Availability: confirm that the individual fish can be purchased and when it can leave.

Use the photograph and video together

Look at body balance, visible skin, fins, pattern and movement. A bowl photograph is useful, but a video gives another view of the specific fish. Ask for clarification when reflections, water or the angle make something difficult to assess. Colours on screens and in different lighting can vary.

Ask about quarantine and delivery

Read the quarantine procedure and delivery arrangements. Ask about the individual koi's readiness for sale and the receiving conditions in your pond. Health and transport questions should be answered before payment.

Compare the whole purchase

A lower advertised fish price may not be the lower delivered cost. Compare packing and delivery charges, the evidence available for the fish, collection arrangements and the support you can obtain after purchase.

Make a confident decision

Use our variety guide to explore the options. When you have a shortlist, send the references and the questions that matter to you. We will discuss the fish currently available rather than promise a future result.
